The Business Of Photography – There Is No Magic Wand

It doesn’t matter what your pricing is or how great your portfolio is, there is no way that any one photographer will be the right fit for every photography need even if it’s an area that the photographer specializes in.

Headshots, for example, are one of the key areas that I work in. I have found two things to be true when it comes to headshots. First, someone will like my work but not what I offer in the $125 to $190 price range. Second, my portfolio doesn’t appeal to them for the style headshot they think they want. But when the portfolio is a match and the pricing is a match, then I am able to move forward and get the session scheduled. If I stay focused on the YES, I can move my business forward. It’s when I get stuck on the NO’s that can set my business back.

Once a photographer realizes that his or her pricing and/or portfolio will NOT be a match for everyone, the photographer can save themselves a lot of time by moving on to the next potential client. If you like your portfolio, are continuing to improve your portfolio, are closing business on a regular basis from your portfolio, have fair market pricing and regularly close business at your asking price, there is no need to try to be the photographer for everyone. Accept it and move on.
